What are Wisdom Teeth and why they are not able to come through normally
Wisdom teeth are the molars (back teeth) that come through last, usually in your late teens or early 20s.
There are normally four wisdom teeth – two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw – but some people have more, fewer, or even none at all. While a person has 32 teeth, the jaw can sometimes be too small to accommodate for all of them. In fact, many people only have enough room for 28 teeth. If there is not enough space for the wisdom teeth to come through properly, it may come through at an angle.
When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting they are called impacted. This indicates their inability to erupt into the proper position for chewing and cleaning.
You’re more likely to have issues with these molars than with any other teeth..Each year, some 10 million wisdom teeth are removed, or extracted, in the U.S
At Wisdom teeth doctors Penrith & Chatswood we recommend a scan at 16-18 years of age to anticipate and assess problems early than late.

Why Dentists Consider Removal of Wisdom Teeth

Erosion Cavity
When the wisdom tooth hits the neighbouring molar, it can cause infection

Cysts
Can destroy the bone and damage other teeth

Crowding
Occurs when the wisdom tooth pushes hard against other casusing crowding

Infection
When an impacted wisdom tooth pushes through the gum , an infection can form around the top of the tooth.
Symptoms of wisdom teeth infection
Signs of gum infection caused by a wisdom tooth include:
Red and inflamed looking gum near the wisdom tooth
Swelling in gum or cheek around the area
Dull throbbing ache or pain needing painkillers
Pus coming from the gum
Swollen and sore lymph nodes underneath the jaw
Difficulty opening the mouth and swallowing
Bad breath.
Why we should address the problem before it becomes a real problem
Surgery to remove wisdom teeth in the mid 30’s and beyond is much more difficult and recovery is often slower and more painful. For this reason, if x-rays show wisdom teeth are present, and have very little chance of full and normal eruption, then removing wisdom teeth BEFORE problems arise is recommended.
Wisdom teeth that are left for a “wait and see approach” will often be harder to remove and may result in a slower and more painful healing phase. There is also a greater chance of complications from the surgery to remove them.

If they are impacted
wisdom teeth that are trapped behind the last molar are called impacted teeth. In time, it is most likely that the wisdom teeth will push against an adjacent tooth, causing serious pain, destruction and and irritation to the surrounding areas.
If they come in at the wrong angle
They may press against your other teeth. Sometimes if existing teeth are already crowded, the wisdom teeth can make the crowding worse If the tooth is on its side under your gum, it can destroy nearby teeth by eating away the roots.

If you have recurrent gum infection around wisdom teeth
Sometimes the infected gums around the wisdom teeth harbour the nasty bacteria and acts like a source of infection for rest of the mouth. You may not be able to reach your wisdom teeth, brushing these teeth can be difficult. Food and bacteria can get stuck between the wisdom teeth and the teeth next to it, leading to tooth decay and gum infections. A wisdom tooth may appear through the gum with part of it still covered. This causes swelling and can be very painful.
If a wisdom tooth is decayed
If a wisdom tooth is decayed due to the fact that it’s virtually impossible to clean, it may also be time for an extraction.
Crowded wisdom teeth in the upper jaw often lean sideways and rub against the cheek. This may cause ulcers on the cheek and chewing problems.

Before or after the braces or invisalign
sometimes the orthodontists recommend removal of wisdom teeth before or after the treatment to make sure the eruption of wisdom teeth.
During the wisdom tooth eruption, it often tends to grow towards other teeth that may result in misalignment and crowding and hence it is sometimes essential to remove them early before it changes the structure of your teeth.
